About these courses:

The Certificates I - IV in Spoken and Written English (CSWE) provide a curriculum framework to develop the spoken and written English language, literacy and numeracy skills of beginner, post-beginner, intermediate and advanced learners. It is the national curriculum framework delivered to people where English is their second language.
These courses provide first class training and learner support. Certificate I in Spoken and Written English - 91421NSW
The Certificate I in Spoken and Written English includes the Course in Preliminary Spoken and Written English and develops skills for learners who have just started learning English and had minimal exposure to English. The certificate is designed to develop speaking, pronunciation, listening, reading and writing skills at a beginner’s English level. This qualification is designed for extremely limited users of English, who convey and understand only general meaning in very familiar situations and have frequent breakdowns in communication. 

Certificate II in Spoken and Written English – 91422NSW
The Certificate II in Spoken and Written English develops skills for learners to satisfy their own simple everyday transactional and limited social needs. The certificate is designed to develop speaking, pronunciation, listening, reading and writing skills at an introductory English level. The qualification is designed to teach English to learners at post-beginner level.

Certificate III in Spoken and Written English - 91423NSW
The Certificate III in Spoken and Written English focuses on general English language skills for day-to-day life, for work and for further study. It develops skills for learners to satisfy basic social needs, routine situations for everyday commerce, recreation and linguistically undemanding vocational environments. The certificate content is designed to develop speaking, pronunciation, listening, reading and writing skills at an intermediate English level. This qualification is suitable for modest learners who have a partial command of the language, coping with overall meaning in most situations, though is likely to make mistakes.

Certificate IV in Spoken and Written English: Employment & Further Studies - 91420NSW & 91419NSW
The Certificate IV in Spoken and Written English focuses on:
Employment: This qualification is designed for people from non-English speaking backgrounds who have overseas qualifications, training, skills or experience. Learners study one or two specialisations – jobseeking or workplace communication, developing awareness of Australian culture and spoken and written communication for both casual and formal environments.
Further Studies: This qualification aims to develop competence in the analysis and communicative use of English for academic purposes. It does this by providing input and practise in aspects of teaching, learning and assessment common to university study in Australia.  Particular attention is paid to developing the language and skills necessary to write assignments, take part in discussion, listen to lectures and read academic texts.

These courses provide the foundation skills and knowledge through nationally recognised vocational training for an individual to be able to commence and advance their careers in a number of industries

Entry requirements:

CSA Training Services will undertake an assessment of each leaner using the Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF) to assess their English abilities and to ascertain the level of the Certificate of Written and Spoken English they will undertake.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) – is offered to any learner who can provide evidence of competency for units offered within these certificates. During the enrolment process a potential learner will complete a checklist and discuss any prior experience before commencing to determine their eligibility for RPL.

It is required that the learners first language must not be English. Learners should have permanent residency (passport required).

Cert I CSWE        500 hours - Develops skills for learners who have:
                              Just started learning English
                              Had minimal exposure to English

Cert II CSWE       400 hours – Develops skills for learners to satisfy their own simple everyday transactional and    limited social needs

Cert III CSWE      400 hours – Develops skills for learners to satisfy basic social needs, routine situations for everyday commerce, recreation and linguistically undemanding                                      vocational fields

Cert IV CSWE     400 hours (Employment) – Develops skills for learners who wish to participate in a range of vocational contexts
Cert IV CSWE     400 hours (Further Studies) – Develops skills for learners to participate in a range of further studies

CGEA is designed for anyone wishing to improve and develop their English, Maths and general learning skills in a friendly, informal environment. These courses cater to different needs and abilities, from beginners to more advanced and early school leavers. These accredited courses can lead to improved work opportunities, further study and other accredited courses.

What the course delivers:


Certificate I in General Education for Adults – 21772VIC
The Certificate I in General Education for Adults (CGEA) is an accredited course designed for learners who have left school early who need to improve their reading, writing, maths, computer and general education skills. Self-confidence and study skills are other outcomes of the course that enable learners to prepare for further study and/or employment. Learners can pathway to further study such as Certificate and Diploma courses or employment.
Areas of study typically include:

  • reading and writing
  • numeracy
  • Australian environmental issues
  • health care
  • the arts in Australia
  • Australian history
  • the legal system
  • the education system

Many adults of various ages and backgrounds take these courses - ages range from 16 to 64 - and at least 25 different language backgrounds are represented among learners. Improving your reading and writing skills can help you not only in the workplace, but also in life’s daily activities, such as dealing with the bank and government agencies, or using the internet.


Certificate II in General Education for Adults – 21773VIC
This certificate addresses the education and training needs of adults who left school early and who need to improve their literacy, basic maths and general education skills. Delivered to a range of learner groups, including those who have left mainstream education early, and whose life experiences have inhibited access to education, training and employment.

The Certificate II in General Education for Adults consists of five components:

  • Core units 
  • Core Skills – reading
  • Core Skills – Writing
  • Core Skills – Numeracy and Mathematics
  • Special interest electives

Successful completion of the Certificate II requires successful completion of:

  • 2 Core units
  • 2 Core Skills - Reading
  • 2 Core Skills -Writing
  • 2 Core Skills – Numeracy and Mathematics
  • Special interest electives

Where a course is not completed, a Statement of Attainment will be issued for any completed units/modules.
